Every failed Data Cloud implementation has one thing in common — they tried to configure features before understanding their data. Segments that return zero results. - What data do we have and how good is it? — Profile every source system before design. Know your null rates, format inconsistencies and data volume before configuring anything.

StyleNow had customer data in 8 siloed systems — Salesforce CRM, Magento e-commerce, a legacy loyalty platform, Marketing Cloud, in-store POS system, a returns management system, a customer support tool and a mobile app. No team had a complete view of any customer. Marketing was sending win-back emails to customers who had purchased the previous day. VIP customers received the same email as first-time buyers. Abandoned cart recovery was running on a 48-hour batch cycle.

Challenge 1 — Shared email addresses: Family accounts using the same email across multiple profiles. Solved with a Data Transform identifying emails with more than 3 different Individual IDs and excluding them from email-based Identity Resolution matching. Phone-based and loyalty-card-based deterministic matching continued for these profiles.
Challenge 2 — In-store anonymous customers: Customers who shopped in-store without scanning their loyalty card had no linkage to their online profile. Solved by adding probabilistic Name + Postcode matching as Rule 3 in Identity Resolution, catching approximately 340,000 additional cross-channel profile merges.
Challenge 3 — Credit budget management: Initial design had 12 segments on Rapid Refresh and all CRM Data Streams on hourly batch. Credit consumption audit in Week 3 showed projected 40% budget overrun. Resolved by switching 10 segments to daily Full Refresh and CRM to daily batch. Only abandoned cart and tier upgrade segments remained on real-time and Rapid Refresh respectively.

Real-time streaming was kept only for critical threshold events — zero logins for 3+ consecutive days.
Challenge 2 — Defining the composite health score: The initial health score formula produced a score of 100 for accounts that had one power user but 95% of seats unused. The formula was revised to weight seat-level adoption (40% of score) more heavily than individual power user activity (10%). Challenge 1 — Raw financial data and LLM: The bank could not allow account balances or transaction history to reach an external LLM. Solved by never ingesting raw financial amounts into Data Cloud. The complete flow involves six systems working in sequence within 3 minutes. The customer adds items to their cart and then closes the browser without completing checkout. The Web SDK JavaScript tag on the website detects the cart abandonment event and immediately sends a streaming event payload via HTTP POST to the Data Cloud Ingestion API. The payload contains the customer's session identifier, cart contents including product IDs and prices, and a timestamp. This arrives in the Web Cart DMO within seconds. The cart status field updates to Abandoned. A Data Action configured on the Web Cart DMO with trigger condition Cart Status = Abandoned AND cart items greater than zero detects this update and fires immediately. The Data Action target is a Marketing Cloud API Event. Data Cloud sends the API Event payload to Marketing Cloud Journey Builder. The journey configuration sends email message one instantly — AMPscript in the template renders the exact cart products from the payload, addresses the customer by first name and shows a discount code calibrated to their LTV tier using IF-THEN logic.
